In the 1990s Craig-Martin made the decision to transfer his style of art into painting and developed his trade mark style of bold lines and flat vibrant colour.
Micheal Craig-Martins main form of inspiration is minimalism, pop art and everyday objects. The majority of his paintings are produced by using acrylic paint on canvas.
Micheal Craig-Martins work inspires me and relates to my work as I am very attracted by his use of bright bold colours and simple backgrounds. I am also a fan of how he uses everyday objects as the subject of his paintings, which is something I like to do myself in my own work.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is most famous for his screen-print images of Marilyn Monroe, images on Campbell's soup cans and album covers and sensational newspaper stories. Warhol was a pioneer of the pop art movement and is the most famous of them all.
"I just paint things I always thought were beautiful, things you use everyday and never think about" -Andy Warhol.
For most of his works Warhol used silkscreen printing on canvas as the the 'mass produced' and 'machine like' look appealed to him. With his silkscreen prints he preferred working straight from photos as he found they came out cleaner then using one of his own works. Warhol also welcomed the 'imperfections' as he believed they added to the finished piece. he also used acrylic paint in his work.
Andy Warhol's main inspiration were artists such as Robert Rauchenberg and Jasper Johns they inspired him to expand his experimentation. In 1960 Warhol began using advertisements and comic stripes in his paintings.
Andy Warhol's work inspires me/relates to my work as i'm very inspired by the silkscreen portraits he produces which include very bold and outlandish colours and skin tones. Andy Warhol is one of the artists that has inspired me to use unique colours for skin tones in my portraits.

Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse is widely regarded as the greatest colourist of the 20th century and as a rival to Pablo Picasso.
Matisse is known for his use of colour.
Matisse was originally interested in cubism however he rejected it and instead focused on using colour as a main foundation to his paintings. Matisse is classed as the leader of the of the french movement Fauvism a word, taken from an art critic who wrote about an exhibition in which Matisse and others showed their work, the critic described the show as les fauves which is french for wild beasts.
Two of Matisse's inspirations were North America and Japanese art, he was also influenced by the works of post impressionists Paul Ce'Zanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Paul Signac. Matisse liked his art to be pure and serene, devoid of anything depressing and troubling.
Matisse used a variety of mediums for his works such as gouache on paper, pastel, cut out bits of paper, oil paint , and charcoal. Matisse's work inspires and relates to my work is because of his use of colour and brush strokes.

Pablo Picasso
Picasso is the creator of cubism and is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Picasso went through different stages where his style and materials changed, these were called "periods". The examples are his blue period where he would paint in mostly blues and greens and his rose period where his colour pallet warmed up.
Picasso's main influences where Paul Cezanne and his experimenting with three dimensional space and of African art. It was these that helped to inspire him to create cubism, which he began along with George Brague.
What I enjoy about Picasso's work is how he used colour to portray his emotions such as how his blue period was when he was depressed and how his rose period was from when he was in a happier frame of mind.
Picasso's work inspires me/ relates to my work as i'm inspired by his use of bold colours and unusual colours for his portraits, I am also inspired by how he would use very limited and monotone colour pallets, such as when he was in his blue period.

Britto's main inspirations are Picasso, Georges Braque and Matisse. Britto's style is bright and bold with a distinct Pop art style, his creations often include patches of geometrical patterns adding texture in an almost fractured perspective. Sandy Skoglund
Sandy Skoglund is an American photographer and installation artist. Skoglund took her early inspiration from a pair of married photographers by the name of Becher. Skoglund is renowned for her surrealist bold coloured images brilliantly contrasted with monochrome. Skoglund's materials that she uses consist of sculptures, paintings, household items and furnitue, she then changes their original colours by either upholstering , painting or covering the items with various materiels. The work Soglund produces consists of photographs in staged environments and building carefully staged scenes using sculptures she has made until the final piece is finished, taking many months to complete. Her famous artwork from the 1980's is called Radioactive Cats which consists of a monochrome background, a man and woman facing away from the viewer and an abundance of almost acidic green cats which Skoglund sculpted herself. Skoglund's artwork appears on the 1992 album titled Revenge of the Goldfish by the alternative American rock band Inspiral Carpets. Overall in Skoglund likes to portray how we can see space and yet see flat but deep spaces. The message behind her work is how anxiety plays a part of peoples lives in a world that lets you believe anyone can have anything, but is full of excess. The way Skogland influences my work is in her use of bold colours that almost glisten to the eye.
