artist research
Alice Pattullo

Alice Pattullo is an illustrator who is heavily inspired by British traditions, folklore and superstitions. Pattullo’s work relates to mine because her work is centered around superstitions and folklore, similar to my work. I really enjoy Pattullo’s work especially the colours she uses in her prints I really like how each print has its own limited colour pallet I think it really makes the work creepy and it relates well with the theme.

Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh's work relates to my work because he uses a lot of texture in his work. He paintings in thick layers of oil paint which is something I want to experiment with. Another reason his his work relates to mine is because his relation ship with colour as he uses colour to show emotion in his work which is what I'm trying to achieve. I really enjoy Van Gogh’s work I especially like how he uses paint. With the many brush strokes of think paint he brings a new dimension to his paintings.
André Derain

Derain uses bright, bold and unnatural colours in his work. He often uses colour to express noise and busyness in a scene as shown in his piece ‘The pool of London’. Derain's work relates to my work because i also use colour to help show meaning to my work, as I use bright colours to show good luck and dark colours to show bad luck. I really enjoy Derain’s work; I like how he expresses emotion and noise of a piece such as bold colours to show a busy piece and cool colours or a calm piece.
Justin Gaffrey

Justin Gaffrey is a painter and he uses thick acrylic paint applied with a pallet knife to create his paintings. Gaffrey’s work relates to mine as this technique is something, I would like to try to experiment with in my paintings. I enjoy Gaffrey’s work I especially like how the thick paint and texture gives his paintings a new dimension, as how the subject of his paintings pop out from the canvas

NEGOTIATED LEARNING PLAN

Outline of current concerns
Reflecting on the work you have previously made - outline the concerns/ideas that you wish to develop in this module. You might plan to continue and further develop a personal project begun in Stage 1 or develop additional and/or new ideas/concerns
-
.The project I'm developing is called good omens and bad omens.
In this project I'm going to research good omens and bad omens, what they mean and what they symbolise as well as what they mean to me
Artists I'm going to research
-
Vincent van Gogh
-
Paul Cezanne
-
Camille Pissarro
-
Henri Matisse

Studio practice/working methods
What working processes or strategies do you intend to use to develop your personal project? What new processes/strategies/studio practices do you intend to try/‘test out’ during this module?

-
In this project im will be experimenting with different techniques and mediums
Mediums/ techniques im going to be using
-
Drawings
-
Oil pastels
-
Acrylic paint – experimenting with different colours and techniques such as impasto
-
Oil paint
I would like to experiment more with texture in my painting such as using brushstrokes and using pallet knifes
What do you need to do, to help achieve your personal project?
For example: What areas of research are needed to support your project? How will you expand your knowledge of the context(s) are you working in? Which artists, writers, critics, gallery/museum/exhibitions/site visits do you need to be knowledgeable about? What skills do you need to acquire or develop? For example; Welding, printmaking processes, painting skills, illustrator or Photoshop.
-
Skills I need to develop are using oil paints as I haven’t used these before. Another skill I need to develop is photoshop as I think this will help me plan my painting out better.
Personal Development Goals. This could be particular skills that you
would like to develop e.g. the ability to write about own work with greater clarity; it might be to investigate a volunteering or placement opportunity related to your career ambitions; it might be a technical skill; or to develop ways, (with the help of the module leader or your personal tutor) to increase your confidence when speaking about your work in a group situation.
-
In this project I would like to develop my ability to present my work to a group as this is something I struggle with.

Personal Evaluation (This section to be completed before assessments)
To what extent have you achieved or developed the goals set out in sections 1 and 2 above?

-
I feel that I have achieved what I set out to do in sections 1 and 2. I researched good and bad omens and I made a series of paintings and drawings that I feel reflect that and show the meanings behind the omens. i have also incorporated texture into my work and have used the different mediums i wanted to try such as oil pastels and oil paint
-
i did not research the artists I originally showed as i felt that they didn't relate to my work as much as i would of like so insted i researched :
-
Alice Pattullo
-
Vincent Van Gogh
-
André Derain
i feel that these artists relate to my work more.
